Question:  Is 6" enough soil for my vegetables  to grow well?
Answer:  Yes!  That is the unique advantage to square foot gardening.  Our website pictures show real
vegetables thriving in a 6" deep planter box.  The plant roots simply spread out rather than down.

Question:  When do I need to use a 12" deep box?
Answer:  The 12" deep box is for growing deeper rooted vegetables like potatoes and large carrots .  
Depending on what vegetables you are wanting to grow, a 12" deep box may be needed right away!

Question:  How much food can I grow in a 4x4 box?
Answer: Over 100 plants or enough food for a salad every day of the week for one adult for an entire
season.

Question: How do I know where to place my box in my yard?
Answer: First of all, make sure you have 6-8 hours of sun.  The closer to your house the more convenient
it will be to care for.  Keep it away from large trees that might shade it or have roots that may interfere.


Question:  What is the difference between using a wood bottom and a weed cloth?
Answer:  We suggest a wood bottom for your box if you are placing it on a deck or cement patio, and
for easier portability.  If you are putting your box over a former garden area or grass, weed cloth is
could be a better fit because it will allow for a deeper root system.

Question:  Do you ship the wood bottom?
Answer:  Unfortunately, we do not.  We can only ship the weed cloth.  However, you can attach a wood
bottom yourself with self-tapping screws.

Question:  Do I need a grid for my box?
Answer:  The grid is essential  for visualizing  the spacing needed to apply Square Foot Gardening
techniques. It will make the most of your box space and It also keeps your garden organized and
attractive.

Question:  I have never gardened before.  How can I be sure I'll succeed?
Answer:  We highly recommend the book "The All New Square Foot Gardening" which is available for
order on our accessories page.  This book will give you every detail you need to be successful even if you
have never gardened before. This simple method can be done by anyone of any age or ability.

Question:  What is in your soil?
Answer:  Mel's Mix. It consists of 3 equal parts of peat moss, vermiculite, and several different
composts; mushroom,dairy,fine soil conditioner(wood), poultry,and worm castings.  The first two
ingredients will last indefinitely while the compost which breaks down naturally over time will need to
be replenished on an as-needed basis.

Question:  Do you ship your soil?
Answer:  While we would like to ship our soil, the cost of doing so is prohibitive.  We will ship you the
instructions with your order on what type of soil you can buy at your local nursery.
